Web indexing (or Internet indexing) refers to methods for indexing the contents of a website or of the Internet as a whole. Individual websites or intranets may use a back-of-the-book index, while search engines usually use keywords and metadata to provide a more useful vocabulary for Internet or onsite searching. With the increase in the number of periodicals that have articles online, web indexing is also becoming important for periodical websites.[1]
Please note the difference between “crawling” a backlink and “indexing” a backlink. First google crawls a website with their spider bots and so google knows about the content including your backlinks. At this stage your backlink gets counted and valued. Wheather the site gets indexed or not is decided by google’s AI and depends on various factors like domain authority, content quality, content length any many many more.

Most webmasters choose to use an automatic Sitemap tool, such as the Google XML Sitemaps Wordpress plugin, the general-purpose XML-Sitemaps.com, or a variety of other free options you can find online.[8] Typically, all you need to do is enter your site's domain name and download the completed Sitemap file. You could also try these alternatives:[9]
Use Google Search Console to track your website. Google recommends logging in about once a month to see if there are any surprising errors or dips in traffic.[2] This site also provides a variety of indexing-related tools. For example, you can confirm that Google can access your pages ("Fetch as Google"), notify Google of a domain change ("Change of Address"), and issue urgent blocks on content you need to take off your site ("Remove URLs").

Even if you submit URL to Google, their AI not only needs to classify and register the data on your website, it also has to evaluate whether your content is good, and relevant for competitive keywords or just an unintelligible spam fest that got pumped with tons of backlinks. This means it’s possible your website was crawled, but the link indexing process is still underway.

Metadata web indexing involves assigning keywords or phrases to web pages or web sites within a metadata tag (or "meta-tag") field, so that the web page or web site can be retrieved with a search engine that is customized to search the keywords field.[3] This may or may not involve using keywords restricted to a controlled vocabulary list. This method is commonly used by search engine indexing.
